Here’s what the people told us about living with vision loss.

SeeWay is an initiative from Guide Dogs designed specifically to support people with permanent changes in their vision, specifically for those who are in the earlier stages of adjusting to their diagnosis and vision loss.

SeeWay aims to help patients by complementing your care by only providing appropriate information to patients that will help them to continue to live independently. We are not a medical service, we are an insights-based source of support to you and your patients.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT undertook significant market research to better understand the demographics and unmet needs of people with low vision or newly diagnosed with an eye condition which could cause permanent loss of sight.

Patients have told us they are not always ready to take in all the information provided at the time of consultation and often have many questions arise after diagnosis, turning to the inevitable Google for information.

Here are some of the research insights around the unmet needs of people with low vision

  • 88% of respondents told us they would use an easily accessible centralised platform to find information and services on low vision.
  • 55% of respondents were actively seeking new information related to their diagnosis via the internet (most commonly on mobile devices).
  • 94% saw value in having information and services tailored to their specific needs.
  • 90% would be willing to answer questions to build a personalised profile.

Here’s what people told us about living with low vision

  • “Finding information is hard. I do not know where to go or if I can trust it”.
  • “It’s just nice to be able to relate to other people in the same situation”.
  • “There were dark periods in my life when I felt so isolated”.

How SeeWay Works

Patients are invited to learn more about their diagnosis and supports available to them around low vision by personalising their journey with information about themselves and their goals. They will receive an email containing their “MySight Guide” immediately and then on an on going basis, with personally tailored information they have told us is of interest to them.

Any information shared with us is only used to support the patient journey and we securely manage all information provided. We value our relationship with you and we value your referrals. We want to make sure we provide the best experience possible.

SeeWay’s Key Goals

We aim to equip, support, and empower each client to live the life they choose and to stay independent for longer. Some of the topics which we cover are:

  • Basic information around eye conditions, rather than leaving it to the inevitable “Dr Google”. We will always direct back to you for specific information and guide a patient to authority foundations such as Macular Disease Foundation and the like.
  • How to use technology for navigating daily life.
  • Skills to overcome obstacles and finding ways to maintain
    independence safely.
  • Access to support services for those diagnosed with vision loss and their loved ones.
  • Access to local community resources.
  • Access to information about funding, care options, transport, support at work, etc..
