A smart bulb is an internet-capable LED light bulb that allows lighting to be customised, scheduled and controlled remotely. Since they come in different shapes and sizes there’s a smart bulb for almost any lamp or fixture, indoors and outdoors. Smart bulbs are very useful for people experiencing vision loss allowing you to light a room without having to find the switch.
Smart bulbs are now easily available at supermarkets and hardware stores and are a convenient way to manage your lighting with just your voice. Paired with Alexa, smart bulbs can be managed by simply asking for the lights to switch on, off, dim or brighten making your home more accessible. To connect smart light bulbs with Alexa, you’ll typically need to install the corresponding app for the bulb (ie Philips) and link it to your Alexa app. After linking, you can ask Alexa to discover devices, and she’ll automatically find your smart bulbs and follow your directions on turning them on/off, dimming and grouping them together – for example ‘Turn on all kitchen lights’. It is really easy to set-up but if you are unsure ask a neighbour or friend for help. Smart bulbs will cost just slightly more than a standard light bulb and the apps to run them are free to download. Smart bulbs are installed in exactly the same way as a standard bulb – no electrician required!
Don’t forget to refer to safety instructions and regulations when using smart technology.
